To say Victoria Memorial in Calcutta, India, is beautiful is an understatement. This huge, iconic structure made of marble is a British memorial dedicated to Queen Victoria, former Empress of the British Empire. Built in the early 1900s to commemorate her death, today, the building is open throughout the year and hosts historical exhibits on British India, Independent India, special events and art collections, including many oil paintings depicting the Royal Family and its relationship with India. The 64 acres of well-manicured lawns and gardens on the building’s site are open to the public. Many guests sit on the grass and drink tea and eat samosas and peanuts with salt and hot pepper. When people visit the space at night, there is often a light and sound show describing the history of India.
